azimuth angles by Emily Tongawakened in
the beautiful beautiful
of the wind.
i must needs find
some higher ground on
which to stand that
each strand of
hair upon my head might
blow a different way. 09/01/2008 Author's Note: "azimuth angle": the direction
or bearing toward which a
sloping surface faces

Posted by Michelle Angelini on 09/02/08 at 04:03 AM This is a incredible gem. I can feel such strong emotion and freedom in these words. It's almost as if the narrator is flying - if not actually, then in the heart or mind - allowing the imagination wings. |
Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 09/03/08 at 02:45 PM Great premise, lovely alliteration in the title, and I have to agree with M and M - beautiful feeling in this - an embracing of the wind and using to its fullest and your fullest potential. I love how the words "stand" and "strand" marry. The image of your hair blowing in all directions is just delightful and wonderfully symbolic. |
Posted by Angela Nuzzo on 09/04/08 at 07:44 AM Emily, this is beautiful beautiful! :) It reminded me of a "dream" I have of seeing the ocean for the first time & standing on the beach with the sea wind blowing my long hair in every direction. Some day. I love how you used language in a different way, not sticking to the rules. It gives the poem a uniqueness. Well done! |
Posted by Charlie Morgan on 09/05/08 at 02:17 PM ...emily...echoing others, iterating the non-rule approach, TOUCHE!, i'm reminded of Thomas Wolfe in the book: Look Homeward Angel(pub: early 1900's...and he has one sentence that is 153 words long without ever putting a period...my point is that any/every English teacher would not let that pass, even tho' he used commas and semi-colons, which in those days were not understood at all by mainstream readers, editors of course but not Everyman...touche! on the 'i must needs...' |
