George Carlin, you are dead by Kristina WoodhillGeorge Carlin,
you are dead;
your cake's been eaten,
stuff's been shed,
but not before,
my savvy man,
you left me
sinking in
your sand
of sifting tones
and sharp pitched
queries
punching holes
in worn out
theories
poking at
my thin
skinned
ribs -
a xylo tune
you drummed,
then hit
the nail upon
my narrow headed
world and shaved
me bald -
your spry, wry words
all tap, tap, taps -
each chiseling
my cushioned fat
and left me
howling
from the pain
exposed,
bare
naked and
ashamed
of words I'd
stuffed between
thick books
derivatives
of
dirty looks
I'd given you
soon slid behind
my hand,
where giggles
rippled,
chuckles
ran
the gamet
way beyond
your Dirty Seven;
raising Peter's
brow in Heaven
saints
now
will filter
through
acerbic skits
on angels'
rules;
George Carlin
you are dead,
we'll hang onto
each word
you said
until we meet again,
old friend,
until we meet again

Posted by Steven Kenworthy on 06/25/08 at 04:07 AM a fine tribute. didn't watch much of his work, but the fact that you could come up with this wizzer about a dead comedian who some people would call heartless is mighty impressive. you put together quite the little jam here kw. kinda makes me wanna go watch him. :] |
Posted by James Zealy on 06/25/08 at 04:12 AM George Carlin was the irreverent hippy dippy weatherman. Always sarcastic always playing word games and always trying to make us think. In that vein his work was eloquent profane and after its own fashion poetic. He would have loved this Kristina. |
Posted by Mara Meade on 06/25/08 at 02:32 PM Yep, this would make him grin. Great tribute! |
Posted by George Hoerner on 06/25/08 at 02:37 PM Very well done Kristina! Humor is one of the most difficult things to perform and he did it so well as you have in this poem. |
Posted by Sandy M. Humphrey on 06/25/08 at 10:00 PM Great tribute to the "Old Guy" as my 15 year old neice calls him for she discovered him sitting on the couch watching with her Uncle J. I just know he opened our minds to expand upon the thought processess and left us rolling at the same time. smh |
Posted by Charlie Morgan on 06/25/08 at 10:03 PM ...kristina, a lovely poetic tribute to a good man, what depth of appreciation...good serious ditty...charlie |
Posted by Glenn Currier on 06/25/08 at 10:59 PM Kristina, You capture my own reactions to Carlin so well. He did chisel and challenge and with such a sharp wit, he sent me reeling. I really like the rhymes in your poem, the light feeling they give a good bow to the man's humor. Well done. |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 06/27/08 at 05:31 PM Yup, he had a tendency to do that. I admire his courage, especially in the early days. I wasn't much up on his recent act, but enjoyed him on SNL. Great tribute poem Kris; equal to the stature of the comic genius it was written for. |
