Silence Grew

by Kristina Woodhill

I never knew
that silence grew
a heavy heavy sound
that weighs upon my
waiting ears
a pulsing kind of
pound

I never knew
eternity of missing you
comprised
the losing
of your family
as well
a sad surprise

I never knew
that silence grew
with vining twining
speed
that muffles as it
crushes messaged
words with casual
ease

the fragrance of
the russian olive
wafts in through our
screen and shares
its late spring message
of the life
its flowers send

the clover makes
our fields blush pink
just now
and lures the bees
we'll taste their message
clearly as we relish
rich honey

the water in our back ditch
flows and soaks
with languid ease
and sends a deep
and satisfying message
to our seeds

how do I
reconcile this world
so eager here
to share
with the growing
of a silence
from a source once
thought to care

I never knew
a silence grew
this cutting knife
hearts through
I'm thankful now
that years ago
that this
I never knew

Brilliantly written. I can feel the loneliness.

"the water in our back ditch flows and soaks with languid ease and sends a deep and satisfying message" is my favorite stanza. Beautiful Kristina. to our seeds

Although this is a very personal poem, I'm sure its message will haunt any and all who read it as it did me. Well done Kris.

Hi Kristine. "I never knew that silence grew with vining twining speed that muffles as it crushes messaged words with casual ease" is just one for many wonderful stanzas....but, 'tis my favorite. The whole poem is full of peace and insight. Delighted. Thanks.

Cognitive dissonance here - wistful air of deprivation nurtures instant breath of gratification...you expire and inspire.

The analogy of a nourishing earth around you in contrast to the void left from loss of human contact is so vivid and eloquent. Beautifully written.

I like the details of the russian olive, the ditch, and the bees, which enrich the feelings. The last lines are a great closer. We wouldn't always be able to enjoy the present, if we could see the ending.

A very nice work. I ave no idea what russn olives are like but this stanza is very sentient and beautiful. I also enjoyed the last stanza's conclusion. Absence may make the heart grow fonder, but lost love is so emptying and suddenly final.

Silence is so powerful. It bears a thousand poems, but yours pierces the heart and begs a sweet antidote of silent listening and loving. Quite a poem, Kristina. Thanks.
