Cut Off

by Kristina Woodhill

What the Pulitzer photo
didn't show
beyond the young woman
squatting on the hard
ground
her back to me
her dark head bent
and
her hands hidden
tending her bloodied
loins
from the just
quick razored
moment
cutting off
her possibilities
was the young man
standing tall
strong, erect
and naked
to his waiting world
ignorant to
the fact
that he would
never, ever
know
the how
the shared
the soul's
deepest
revealing
penetration
of bringing
a woman
joy

The article is painful enough to read...do you have a link to the photo?
Priceless material and powerful shape to this indictment.

Kristina, I see not one superfluous word here. Awful, awesome, and truly powerful. " ...was the young man standing tall strong, erect and naked to HIS WAITING WORLD"... Ouch, in so many ways.

What a horrifying tradition. My heart constricts for women living in such cultures that unneccesary pain are considered a necessary mutilation to what God created. Like there isn't enough unavoidable pain and suffering in our lives. This made me so sad. I had heard of it before. I am so grateful for my God given American heritage. This is just another tremendous reason for gratitude. How infinitely sad our creator must be to see such insanity feeding upon His cherished works of art.

the articles are a wealth of information on this horrid topic.. thank you for posting this piece - its very challenging to read and once again, i'm reminded of how fortunate we are

it is a sad state of affairs, when such unconscionable things occur and and are permit to occur and this poem illustrates it well, and we take the finery of its words to heart.

A tragic practice indeed given much impact with your words.

Intense this blade shaped poem exposing strange human ways... among the many revelations that make one wonder if human consiousness is an advantage. I am always consoled that humans make poetry and art and music too, not only violence, cruelty, and convoluted psychological messes of the basic biological urges and expressions. A brave poem.

ya know, it's been forever since i've checked into any of your work but i'm glad i did because this is NOTHING like most everything else i've been reading on here lately and i'm extremely impressed with the stunning visual imagery that accompanies this write. it is straddling the fine line of disturbing/beautiful which is a tough one to walk. impressive by all means...gutsy.

Very and absolutely powerful.

I always find it difficult to comment on your poetry because so many people have said everything already! Anyway, know that I read it here and there and do enjoy the way in which you spill your words.
