I am the Early Bird

by Kristina Woodhill

I am the early bird
yet do not
seek the worm
whose gritty taste
to tongue and slime
to slant of beak
may chance amuse
this open mouthed
and elemental
dig

Ah, yes, the early bird
before first peck
before the preen
I hold this moment
jealously as dark
hands off to light
the new-filled
cup of nectar
dawn's first thirsty
golden swig

So - like the female bird
her earthen tones
I don,– pretense
discarded gladly
the only tracks
you'll see of me
the shiver vibe
remains as
each foot lifts
off the twig

"I hold this moment
jealously as dark
hands off to light"
is gloriously colorful and brightens the page with delight. Beautiful!

"dawn's first thirsty/golden swig"... is a wonderful line. Puts me in mind of Mary Oliver, from, Why I Wake Early. I appreciate this from your garden of poems. Thanks.

All too happy to read a new bird personified as human poem, having written one myself a few years back titled: Does A Crow Know? It's always interesting how each poet adds a new flavour to the genre; with or without worms. :o)

a most glorious and keen and sensitive and subtly rendered image. this homage to bird and worm and twig and ultimately, air.

Delightful view of nature close up! With an analogy most unusual.
