You Bought Me Flowers

by Joan Serratelli

You bought me flowers
I didn't want them
flowers die
I told you that
Not a good expression
of love
They're pretty
but fleeting
and it makes me sad
to watch them die

I told you that
I didn't want flowers
I wanted something
that would last forever
you say our love will
but you chose flowers
and flowers die

Dear Joan, This is beautiful, I know how you feel... I always would ave rather had a potted plant. Flowers are life, are beautiful, painted colors in a garden. But, to watch them die a slow death is not fun... Living and love is about LIFE!! Everything around love and life should be vibrant, alive , filled with laughter and joy..as much as it can be. I don't even want flowers when I finally die. I want a tree!! Lovely poem...

Flowers play a great second-string....but, you need the first-string to give the flowers, "belief"! Thanks, Joan.

This really points out how people view different symbolic gifts. What is the intent of the giver is also a question that comes to mind. Gift giving is a tricky business, imho.

Powerful analogy. One of your recent best IMO. Reminds me of an old platonic girfriend who refused to ever wear a diamond ring, saying it was bad luck. Diamonds are also suppose to last forever, and yet are next to worthless when trying to sell them back to a jeweler.

Joan, I just came upon this poem. There are depths and feelings running through the veins of this piece which make me think ... what? Flowers are beautiful but, you're right, they don't last. I hope that is not true about your love.
