why we are the way we are

by Kyle Anne Kish

there was just something
in the way he spoke my name-
not quite with the emphasis
on the ‘y’ like most people
would say it. I canÂ’t fully
explain, but he ‘tweaked’
my name and made
it sound like a lullaby
playing me awake.

there was just something
in the way we conversed-
the air stood still
and our words hung
momentarily in the air
waiting to catch
each other in passing,
like a butterfly
caressing a flower.

there was just something,
something-
that eased us both
and made each passing
minute cry out with
despair, “no, no there
are not enough minutes
in the world to be with
this person! make all
minutes last an hour or more.”

there was just something
where my words stopped-
his began and it was like
two snowflakes, shaped
exactly the same, landing
on the pavement together.

there was just something
in the way he moved-
along with me
as his kisses explored
my face, my neck
my shoulders
and my collarbone
that filled my whole
world with sunshine,
butter cream frosting,
and other delicacies
beyond my realm of thinking.

there was just something ...

I hope this was written out of experience, whether for a contest or not. Everyone should be blessed enough to find someone who makes them want to cry out with despair: “no, no there are not enough minutes in the world to be with this person! make all minutes last an hour or more.”

Stanzas 2 & 4 are my favs in this fine, fine poem! "there was just something" - a phrase that takes one into the magic of realtionships. Nicely done.

this is one of the most genuinely smile-inducing potds i've read in a long time. it's simple, and it isn't weighed down by overdone flowery language or images, and the ending is perfect. and the title is thought-provoking. and i love it. awesome.

Your contest entry has definitely made an impact, Kyle Anne. The repetitive line used to open each stanza helps draw the reader in and makes it that much more personal and touching. Congratulation on both the Contest and Poem Of The Day!

A poem of "air stood still" and "words hung momentarily in the air" and though the word, not there, the air is thick with it... details all like notes plucked in the octave of...

Reading this again... even more beautiful... the moment wafts in the air--pure beautiful and perfect--you two... I love this.

...kyleAnn, how did i miss this in 07?, i'm an idiot...this is munchable, so full of feelings we all feel, that noah hasn't made a word for yet, and these authentic moments define a life, we gotta play, eh?...you speak of Thoreau's pose on 'all of us living lives of quiet desperation' and like so many things misunderstood, this ism too is your pome, your words...you [and he] break out of our 'existential' quiet desperation and reach for each other, this little, itty, bitty teeny weeny thing, this union, this symbiotic-ness is what this life-thing is all about, this is a top shelf work...charlie
