Poet in the Summer Forest

by Julie Adams

In the forest in July,
like me, she is at home
with the elders, the trees

no treachery
in the shade of these leaves
only microcosms

of man
little trace
'cept a wishbone path

great willow, pine, oldest oak
let me cool my heels
beneath your cloak of leaves, and dreams

of weathered travelers will follow
no horse at my side
the trees will walk with me

Author's Note: Written upon viewing/considering the calligraphy and artwork of "Travelers in a Wintry Forest" (ink and color on silk scroll) by Jing Hao (900-930 AD). It was on view in the exhibit "Japanese—the Four Seasons" at the MET over the summer

The ability for art to inspire art is one of the greatest of life's beauties.

Julie, I love the form and flow of this poem. It's like Japanese artwork, which I find very beautiful and inspiring. Would love to see this as POTD.

Although I am not familiar with the painting, this piece is surely as beauutiful and meaningful. Art begets more art. That's the way it should be and you did an excellent job with this write!

Julie....I was caught napping (maybe dreaming) how did I miss this? I love its patience. So organic, the way peace is not, much too often these days. It makes me feel. Thanks.

Julie, you have approached this wonderful theme on nature as one would, lovingly and playfully and as one who is delightfully in touch with its infinite spirit. And that you were inspired at the Met ( a place in whose hallways and galleries and exibitions I have traversed countless seasons and on whose steps I have occasinally hung out and ate a hot dog or pretzel and listened on occasion to the guy below the steps strumming his guitar ) makes it doubly wonderful.

A wonderful expression of the art work you viewed. I could feel the oriental aura before I read the author's notes. I like how you have separated "of man" .

This is by far the most gorgeous poem I have seen on this site! I got a chill halfway through! Wonderful work! "No horse at my side/the trees will walk with me." Perfect! Another one for my favourites.

I love the magic in this, and the Asian influence is readily apparent. Congrats on POTD! d:-)
