Super Nova

by Chris Sorrenti

enjoy me while I last
for my fulfillment
play the genius
your entertainment
play the fool
the star burning brightest
the soonest gone

think and say what you will
about me
sticks and stones
my lovelies
sticks and stones
you cannot hurt whose core
is not of this world
those among you judging
themselves be judged

meanwhile
I will kiss away your wounds
embrace your knives
fuse those favorite feathers together
make you fly
where no one else has flown
and when I’m gone
no tears my lovelies
on either side

it won’t be long
another among you
will rise and burn
love you
as no one else can
embrace your knives
kiss away your wounds
for that is how the game is played
sticks and stones
my lovelies
sticks and stones

Author's Note: Inspired by a mean comment on another poem, from an outside "Anonymous" source; one of the less attractive features of the now defunct Poesie.com. This poem was published the following year (2000) in the Australian arts newspaper, Muse, in Canberra. Also, the opening poem to Venus, Mars, And Everything In-between.

This feels dead on to the target - every word packs a punch. So very well written! I would love to hear it out loud also. Thank you.

This is a fine turnaround on a negative experience, and this is the key I believe to resilience, to have a positive manner to do that. A fine outlet, like poetry, instead of the one so many resort to - violence or bitterness. Well shown, Chris.

Why does this remind me of something that could have been quoted in "Clockwork Orange"? I'd say it is a great rebuttal to the negative review.

The repetition of 'sticks and stones' here serves a wonderful purpose in keeping the reader mesmerized to 'how the game is played.' Your word phrases are clear, evocative and vividly delicious. Great write, Chris.

Poesie - now that was a weird, if not wired place. The 'lovelies' affectation is interesting, both as an objective reflection of the nature of the game/arena/protagonists, and as a subtle self-parody, or perhaps self-mocking deprecation which, whether justified or not, represents an implied consideration in the aftermath of such incidents - part of the retrospective/introspective process that inevitably ensues, however inured we may be to 'sticks and stones'...or maybe not :> Whatever, this is an absorbing commentary on conflict and internal resolution.

Hi Chris. Chock-up another well captured emotion/eveny. Great read.

I really like the self-confidence and defiance of this piece - a very strong voice. Well-done, buddy.... d:-)

Yeah, cast away the slings and arrows that are focused on our hearts. Stand up against them and beat them off with our emotional armor. Wonderful response to whatever the comment was. Reminds me of the poem I wrote about my last toxic roommate. Toxicity appears to abound in many places. I really like this Chris!
