I still flutter

by Glenn Currier

I was in her eyes.
They rested on my face
with a softness and ease
confirmed by her quiet smile.
I knew all was well.
I was good.

But then my approach
triggered an averting-
her eyes adrift-
an ice pick in my chest
squishy doubt
the sound of fear
the thump of shame.

Isn't this the story of young love?
Each wrapped up in the other
still finding themselves
in the squeeze of their arms
and the moistness of their lips?

I am old
but still I flutter
on the wings of a glance.
Still those dark mutterings
can pull my egostrings
and cascading plots to please
fall from the lower regions of my mind.

What is different now
is the distant lighthouse
beckoning me to land
beyond my fears
on the shores of love.

What others may think
is none of my business
and beyond my control.

The lifelong lesson
is simple really.
Be
in love.

LOL! I've stopped counting the ice picks in my own chest. Seriously though, I do appreciate the sentiment you express here Glenn, and it's admirable. Personally, I have no problem being in love, my problem is that it's not as easily reciprocated.

...glenn, ahhh yes, myfriend...to be 'in love' with love...quite a wonderous piece here...and yes i still flutter too...so, hats off to you for speaking out for all lovers who are getting old...when it seems to be saved [only] for the young...loved this expression of longingness...peace, chaz

I am old but I still flutter on the wings of a glance that is so moving, tender and vulnerable, and the key to being young at heart. For a while, I didn't think I could still flutter, but found it comes back. Beautiful work.

The comparison of young and mature love striking and so true! Eloquent in the stating.

To love and be loved - an ageless fluttering. This is a fine piece!
