the kiss

by Peter Humphreys

twixt sky
and ground
the mist
hangs down
as we
walk
along
the
strand

together
under a
velvet sky
just
you
and
I
as ever

waiting
wondering
still
if fate
will
play it
kind
for once

as moon
stares
down
from sky
above on
you
and
I

a dog fox
barks a
solo note
as from
your throat
a frightened
sigh of
sadness slips

and lip
on lip
and
mouth
in
mouth
we
kiss

o
how
we
kiss

I read this aloud imaging your wonderful Irish brogue reading to some lucky woman. The phrase, "Be still my heart..." comes to mind - how very romantic! ;-) Such wonderful imagery, I can see the green hills and blue sky in my mind.

Hi Peter. The kiss, I have said is the "shorthand of love". Beautiful. Mis-summer and you're writing like it's still spring! Bravo!

Builds up to a crescendo and melts....like a kiss Perfectly sweet. Love it.

Peter, I agree with Michelle's first comment - I would LOVE to hear you read this. As I read it, I can hear a voice in my mind saying each word. It's amazing what you can do WITHOUT punctuation! I like how the poem starts with the huge sky and it all comes down to a kiss. :) Just beautiful. Valentine's Day perfection!

Congratulations on your Valentine's Day POTD, Peter! Well deserved.

The best way to understand and appreciate this trustworthy Poem Of The Day is to know when a kiss is more than just a kiss. Your Love Poem Contest winner is filled with forgiveness, Peter, well done. Even without the word 'love' it expresses hopes and dreams sweeter than the worlds finest chocolate could ever imagine. Hats off to you and your pen.

if fate will play it kind for once is a great line. Wonderful poem, perfectly capturing the fragility and special excitement of such a moment.

My favorite part of this poem is the "o". For me it is the moon, the exclamation, the open mouthed kiss! This is a beautiful touch, this "o". ... all full of possibility. Gives the poem a center and formal mirroring. The lyrical flow and images..beautiful too!
