Sunshine Mimes

by Kristina Woodhill

Mid season
Our back flower beds
Burst
Seeds both hand cultivated
And those flown in and
Delivered free of charge
From above
Mixed and matching
In our ever changing
Floral world we love

One small hill
An easy eye distance
From our back stoop
Is a small forest
Of wild sunflowers
Those smaller
More sedately sized blooms
Profuse in their abundance
And willingness to share
Their sunny dispositions

They are eye high
As we stroll near
No towering
Prize winners for the local fair
No bending stalks
With heavy heads
Hiding their feast from
Eager perching birds
Teased into
Upside
Down
Circus antics

These shorter, smaller
Sturdy old timers
Their flowers always alert
And welcoming
Bring to us a flitting, delightful
Musical dance of the goldfinch
Its black and gold dress, its size
Match perfectly
That of its chosen partner

And as they sway and touch
Tease and turn
Quick soft beaked kisses
Allow no wall flowers here
While the summerÂ’s breeze
Caresses and cools
These two sunshine mimes
And lets us in
On another
Of our MotherÂ’s wonders

You deliver a pleasant stroll in the summer green, the life that is there if we but stop to notice. Cool poem. Thanks.

Mr. Flowers and I love this scene! And, yes indeedy! —such grace & glory free of charge!
Oh - and your title smiles all over the page!

Many of your pieces, though original, call to mind Mary Oliver. You always finish the piece strong. I admire your writing.

I've never had much of a green thumb, but that's never stopped me from admiring the beauty of flora and resulting poetry. Thanks for the poignant reminder Kris. :o)

Delightfully described! Love those flower gardens and the wild flowers as well. Most enjoyable read.
