Blanc

by Heide McAlister-Bates

In the heat of the summer
I wear white

White like the colour of clouds

The blue-white of glacial ice

The crisp snapping in the breeze white of bedsheets on the line

The vanilla white of ice cream

The heady white of oriental lilies

The dazzling white of Spanish stucco
in the blazing sun

I wear white in the heat
of the summer
Trompe l'oiel of my mind

As rivulets of sweat trickle
down between my breasts
Like the pearls of condensation
on an icy cold glass of lager

Author's Note: Written on the 08:37 commuter train to work this morning. It was quite warm...

this poem is a wonderful array of white lights, twinkling in the poetics you create here...lovely images, my favs: "The dazzling white of Spanish stucco/ in the blazing sun" AND "he crisp snapping in the breeze white of bedsheets on the line"--this line makes me think of putting clothes out when I was in England...the ending is fabulous too tho, well done my friend

Beautiful imagery Heide! White has so many associations and colors within it - never purely just white. It appears some wonderful poetry is written in moments of distraction, when a minds seeks to fill in blank spaces.

I love the monochromatic theme this sets...cool and yet sizzling!

I can't get over the imagery here, Heide. My many other senses get wonderful feelings also. Thank you for writing this. The heat of the summer is almost upon the area I live in. I will smile when it gets here and think of your poem. :)

The supposedly non color white never so colorful. Stupendous read Heide; nice to see it hit No. 1. Congrats!

I'm enjoying the very last of the morning's cool breezes before the inferno starts up and I read this poem. Now I'll have a more positive attitude and there's no question as to what color clothing I'll wear now. Thanks for an excellent read.

Excellent - I can't add much to what's already been said - "a colorful poem about white" comes closest to my sentiment - nice senual touch with the beads of sweat, too. Congrats on POTD! d:-)
