Burgers & Ice Cream

by Chris Sorrenti

For some reason
those words together
never sat well with me
in a culinary manner of speaking
call it a quirk of human nature
simply rubbed this consumer
the wrong way

Upon each occasion encountered
the suggested pairing caused
immediate cerebral indigestion
and yet on carefully considering
the individual combinations
it struck me as odd
both having a propensity
for utilizing animal fat

It may have been the dichotomy
of hot and cold
polarization in the food groups
or simply perhaps
that after burgers and fries
I would have no room for dessert

Never did eat there
at the restaurant with the same title
call it a subliminal failure of advertising
to draw this consumer in

I’ve since moved on
the establishment changed names
yet still those words haunt my pallet
as if culinary fingernails drawn across
a chalkboard menu

Chicken & Ribs always sounded tempting together, but yeah, I wouldn't think of the combo in your poem. Never heard of that outfit. A good one to accompany your Less Cluck one I should think. You'll have a fast food series for sure. Thanks for this slice from the menu file.

Well, having done some research on this...etablishments of this name have some things in common: 1. they all think they have healthy food, and brag about it! 2. they all have silly names attached to the already aforementioned silly name...try "Bub's (B&I)(California), Lick's (B&I) (Ontario,Canada), Zoomie's (B&I) (Washington) and the least silly, Peggy Sue's (B&I)(50's style) but made silly by being in Hawaii...well...I think grenerally it is supposed to appeal to kids... and (epecially) kids' parents by the look of the adverstising.. But the really important thing presented here...is that these thing stick (!) As has been demonstrated and so generously shared in this impeccable, memorable verse...the mundane, and poetically elevated blackboard scratches of the mind... Thanks, Chris!

"yet still those words haunt my pallet as if culinary fingernails drawn across a chalkboard menu" ... oh what you can create with a simple message laminated and tacked up on a restaurant sign. Fabulous, Chris! :)

irony provoking work Chris, and for my philosphical money, no matter how you pair or divorce one word from the other, for purposes that they are vegetally expressed or carnally, all words, coming right down to it, seem to taste like chicken.

in highschool, my best friend and i ate burgers at friendlys and considered the bowl of vanilla icecream after similar to rolaids, helping us relieve our indigestion.

Most interesting commentary on a restaurant name. I have to agree with the sentiment!

Although it doesn't sound good.. I have been known to eat both... lol and liked it! Great read Chris!

i guess you wouldn't like the chain of fast food places down here in Miami called 'Steak n Shake' which is famous for their burgers and nearly ice cream, original flavored milkshakes! now i can never go there without thinking of you and this poem
