a summer day by Charlie Morgan
standing in the haybarn, i's stackin'
and old man harkrider was rackin'
the other boys out in the field
with 'pick it up boys', he appealed.
but not to their sense of worth
more to their right of birth,
which according to him was lacking
'cause 'you boys jes need a good smakin' '
and spit that tobacco he would
while cussing Jesus as loud as he could
wailing 'suns-a-bitches don' braing
them thunder clouds full of rain.'
the rain came, ruined more than his day,
his bounty useless, his seasonal hay,
drenched and worthless where it lay
as old man harkrider stood wet with dismay.
