Castaway

by Glenn Currier

He lay upon me belly to belly
squalling and sobbing with abandon
clutching his life buoy
drifting in the black perigee
of an ocean wave
his stark aloneness
plummets me into the depths
of our tears
as I helplessly comfort him
patting his back
my hand limp and heavy with sadness
for this bereft castaway
of our failed marriage.

Author's Note: As a divorce mediator I sometimes wonder how it must feel for the children. I awoke this morning with this image in my mind.

Very moving - a vividly painted image, and yet the word "helplessly" carried so much weight here, too.... d:-)

Glenn, you've described how it feels in startling clarity. All the words you used - especially -"this bereft castaway" barely scratch the surface of the pain, betrayal, and abandonment I felt after my parents' divorce. While my parents were married, I wanted my father's love. After the divorce, it didn't take long for me to understand, my brothers and I counted less than his new family did. Thank you for your compassion in understanding.

it is good to see a poet still in touch with his emotions and with life in all her phases, be they glum or of good cheer.

As one who's been through the process, I can truthfully say this poem aptly captures the whole range of emotions, masterfully reduced to a few simple words. Hat's off to ya bro!
