Precarious Journey

by Glenn Currier

Last night he called with the news.

Unlike CBS or CNN
with pictures of an Asian earthquake
or Balkan unrest,
his indigo words
were suspended
in leadlike liquid
and cast peculiar ions of darkness
across those many miles
into my inert space …
where I asked…
about…
work.

He tried a matter-of-fact tone,
pink petunia phrases
rather than grave gladiolas
that would alarm me.

He is the eldest,
an anchor of committed love
in the sea of uncertainty
where my boat rocks,
shaky and scattered.

Talk of arrangements for surgery
and dates and locations
erected a scaffold
where I could hang
my quaking jellofear
just barely congealing
with the vague prognosis.

What could I have said?
Did I squander
precious moments
of attentive listening?

In the labyrinth of my confusion
and the scratchy fear
one layer under my skin
I hope I can find
the courage and grace
that will surely be his
on this precarious journey.

Author's Note: I have never done this in this forum, but I am taking the leap and asking you for your prayers and/or positive thoughts for my brother's complete recovery from surgery to remove his cancerous prostate... scheduled for 7:30am April 18, 2005.

..."indigo words, leadlike liquid" and "petunia phrases, grave gladolias"...lovely words describing a painful absorption of meanings that the words carry with them the addition of deeply caring and color(ed)feelings...glenn, peace and prayers to the One and healings for all...peace, chaz

What a strong piece. It conveys such feeling, perhaps because I can relate, but more likely the writing itself. Your family will be in my prayers, and thank you for sharing.

looks like you and I are going through a lot of praying and worry for the health of our brothers right now. Beautifully represented here. Certainly I'll add yours to my prayers.

You have my positive thoughts for your brother. This post also generates positive thoughts - a well-structured and expressed exposition of your present circumstances. Excellent piece of writing.

Evocative, worthy tribute Glenn. At first I thought this might have been about Peter Jennings. My thoughts and prayers are indeed with you both.
