From the Groundhog

by Mary Ellen Smith

Another year has gone its way
My groundhog’s time is come
It’s time to pay the people back
For every meal and crumb.

I relish the attention though
And as those crowds draw near
I wish so much that Groundhog Day
Was more than once a year.

The Mayor whispers in my ear
He thinks in Groundhogese
And I let him think I understand
His language expertise.

The crowd on Gobblers Knob awaits
Icicles on their chins
The band is playing just for me
Its then I see the grins.

They smile because I am so sweet
So smart and handsome too.
They love my two big groundhog teeth
Their praise long overdue.

I smile for the camera’s flash
No autographs, I say
I am ready for my close up now
I haven’t got all day.

I should ask for a bigger paycheck
Running water and some heat
Truffles for my noontime snack
And slippers for my feet!

Well, I‘ld check now for my shadow
But the mayor’s in the way
And that’s when I bite him on the hand
Cause it’s not Mayor’s Day!
