Alice Always by Kate DemereeShe pulls the drapes, shuts the blinds, Hangs the sign marked closed, What is written in her eyes, Only the mirror knows
Scarecrow and the tin man No longer come to play An uneasy ghostly slumber In a shallow grave they lay.
Cowardly lion and Dorothy Play neath a summer sky While Alice and Toto watch as... White Rabbit goes running by..
She closes the door and locks it Slowly turning the key As a reedy whisperer says Alice you will always
be

Posted by Anne Engelen on 02/10/04 at 11:27 AM Is this about growing up and kinda losing the fairy tale belief?
It kinda makes me wonder. Enjoyable read, Kate:) |
Posted by Philip F De Pinto on 02/10/04 at 03:14 PM Wonderful poem about Alice, Kate, whose shutting down is reminiscent of shutting down ratty 42nd street in Manhattan and replacing it with Mickey Mouse. Long live Alice and may her cheshire be sicced on the decorative rodents on watches. Give me the real rats o'ver the cartoon versions anytime. |
Posted by Maureen Glaude on 02/13/04 at 05:49 PM we have a well-known poet award-winning, in Ottawa and Canada, who you could probably find the works of, Stephanie Bolster, who has a series of poems published, in chapbook form or books, about Alice and the author of the fairy tale. She takes the inspiration, like you do, and creates twists and plays on it. I think you did a fine job of this one, Kate, and I felt the wistfulness but the decision to not be involved with those old traps again. |
Posted by Ken Harnisch on 02/13/04 at 07:59 PM you do these twists on the fairy tales and children's tales so well...the irony sizzles and the smiles at its deftness never fail to materialize |
