the Great Debate

by Michele Schottelkorb

feel the past

love the present

embrace the future

(that’s what the wise man said)

screw the past

ignore the present

destroy the future

(the thought rang through his head)

how many hours shall we waste

contemplating our vast existence

how many times will a small one cry

and buckle to Life’s persistence

in the hour of the dead

we place our fears in yours

don’t you see, don’t you hear

the beating through the floor?

we ride upon a magic cloud

and scream and wonder why

the echoes of others laugh at us

from perches way up high

blasphemy comes from within

faith is what you make it

are we ready to stand and fight

or shall we idly fake it?

I say we idly fake it. That way 'they' leave us alone while we go do what we want. Of course, that's just my opinion --I may be wrong. ;)

I love the flow of this poem, and all the places it took me! Poem #6, and your newest fan hurries to read the next one....heehee

Wow, this would make a great song. I detect a little Poe in there. I'm voting it "Poem of the Day", this is fantastic.

This is exactly how I feel today: "screw the past ignore the present destroy the future" except I would use more expletives! LOL I love this Michele, think I'll add it to my favorites! :)

Text nicely reflects title. Thought provoking read stopping any poet dead in his or her tracks to walk more carefully across the mine field of life.

between canyons of great debate you have populated with more than imagery, more than echo, but thought's metaphor and resounding
