Spirits in My Double Helix

by Max Bouillet

blood ghosts stretch
hand in hand
back through my father
and dance into the blood of
my sons

pale ghosts
choking on the black dust
of west virginia coal mines

daring ghosts
that lick the salt of
the atlantic from their
fearful lips

and the ghosts
of countless strangers
that have lapsed into prehistory
but still spiral
inside me
and whisper wisdom
to keep me safe...

so that i too
may become a ghost
and whisper
to my children's
souls

there is nothing like the perennial mad dashing, the continuity of spirits toward infinity.

A very interesting look at the presence of our ancestral lines still working within us. Nicely done.

Well written and evocative read Max.

Great read. Intruiging. "the spirits in my double helix", never thought about it like that, an interesting idea.

"Took my breath away" may be an overused cliche, but this piece really did it! This is how my parents explained heredity and continuity to me as a boy. Excellent poem and wonderful memories. Thanks.

I love this Max... The way you create the atmosphere of both here and beyond, the connections that are, without bounds. Much wisdom here in this loving piece.

oh, your author's comment is amazing- since your poem starts with the words 'blood ghosts', consider making your title "To the spirits in my double helix"...? great poem

I'm especially interested by this one, it's a very enlightening way of looking at lineage and family history. The combination of the mystical idea of ghosts mingled with DNA is very clever.

wow.this... is without words. believe me, it is a prayer that we both share, dear friend.

Mingling ones life with their DNA is a wonderful idea -- then the idea that not only is the dna passed down, but the memories of their lives... love it

Apparitional poetry, Max. This is the best ghost poem I have ever read. It moves extremely well along the generational time line, and culminates with a soft yet dramatic ending. Pe4ce...

Made me think...we are in them, they are in us. Liked it a lot.
