A fool called me a fool, what do I do?

by Ashok Sharda

A fool called me a fool

What do I do?

Shall I feel offended

By giving the fool

Undeserved importance

Undue to an obtuse?

Shall I feel hurt and wounded

For the fool has formed an opinion

On hearsay, believing others

Without knowing for himself?

Shall I feel sorry

For the scorn spitting unreasonably callous fool

As the fools are not wise enough to know

They are acting fools?

Shall I ACT wise

Actively reasoning in the light of my own truth

Pitying the fool in recognition of fool being a fool

As I canÂ’t demand wisdom from a fool?

A fool called me a fool

What do I do?

Author's Note: I derived this poem from a piece I wrote long ago. I have posted that piece separately in the folder-‘something called esoteric’, titled-‘Path to genuine self-love (reasoning out dummy self-love)’. I have a specific purpose in doing so.

Very interesting poem my friend... and the question itself is also interesting, but each must answer it for themselves, mussent they?

I agree with Timothy. Something I'm sure we've all encountered in our own lives. Thanks for framing it so aptly!

Let's hope we can all recognize the foolishness and be wise in our reactions, keeping in mind the wisdom of passing judgement justly. Well presented thoughts here.

This type of fool deserves to wallow and drown in the vitriol they drool upon the wise... Although, happily this has not happened to me much... if I respond with great energy... especially in a defensive manner... it just energizes more follishness. But... what I really want to say to you is thank you for expressing your Self from a vulnerable space... I admire that in poets. You are a good example for us. Ashok, take care of yourself, my friend.

you laugh, remember, you laugh and embrace it for what it is. *kisses your forehead*

You have already given the fool all he needs with the attention from this poem. Remeber, the fool always considers the other the fool. Which are you?

LOL!!! Well, don't act foolish! ;) A bit of self-effacing satire here I think.

i think i'll ponder on why he called me a fool and not focus on the "fool called me a fool". i mean even fools may provide wise comments every now and then. just a thought...

I love this one. "Better to be a wittish fool than a foolish wit"-my misquote from Shakespeare (I dont think I got it quite on but..)

I couldn't help but laugh, Ashok! What a marvelous dilemma and what a marvelous way to think it out!

Realize that no one truly exists and therefore no one called you a fool... and that you don't exist so there was no one present to receive the remark. That being said, very good poem. Thought provoking and honest.

Hi Ashok, Good one. If this person believes what being said from others, without any thing to back it up. I'ld say their the fool not you. That's nothing but gossip and that's not good at all. They should check it out, before saying anything to you. Don't pay no mind to them, they will realize it someday they could have been wrong.

Keeping one's head when all around him are losing theirs ... yes, a truly wise one you are. Thank you. S

If he is a fool, then I doubt he would be able to identify another fool. Because if he could identify foolishness, wouldn't he see it in himself? And if he saw it, wouldn't he strive to become unfoolish? Therefore, him calling another person foolish is foolish in itself and should not be taken seriously.

you do what you have told me to do... you pity them... excellent poem... i am off to read the poem that inspired this wonderful lesson... blessings...

Such a dilema haha! You are so funny and so right. I think I would just smile and give the fool a big hug and say, "you're right man, I AM a fool. Thanks." Then walk away confidently. That would be your solution #4 (act wise and pity). I sense it's an action with potential for a positive reaction- the only solution in which the fool may stop to think...maybe cease to be a fool for one moment (depending on the level of foolishness of course hahah) Wow, I feel like I never make sense when I comment on your poems. This was great! :-)
