A Little Lower Than The Angels by Melissa ArelWalking alone, IÂ’d gather my thoughts
Like a bundle of wildflowers clutched in my hands
IÂ’d look to the black night and see it sparkle.
My hands would meet the moonlight in admiration
As I reached for the place between heaven and earth
Where weÂ’re meant to be a little lower than the angels.
And IÂ’d wait for God to shout down to me
But all the while, He was whispering in my ear.
What IÂ’d want to say to Him in return
Is what the sun says to the sky for giving it a place to shine
But my words would always get in the way.
So, looking down at the earthen ground
IÂ’d see fallen stars scattered by my feet
IÂ’d pick one up and roll it between my fingers.
Kissing it, IÂ’d throw it in a wishing well
Hearing the voice of water splashing with its capture.
IÂ’d smile, knowing my hopes were safely waiting
At the bottom of the deep blue
And my name was carved in the palm of the Master.

Posted by Ken Harnisch on 02/12/03 at 08:08 AM a poem that works on so many subtle and reverential levels that it is difficult to quantify them..and I do love that last line so! An ode to both God and nature...if indeed the two can be separated |
Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 02/12/03 at 05:21 PM Great lines throughout this, from start to finish. Especially love these: And my name was carved in the palm of the Master. I’d gather my thoughts
Like a bundle of wildflowers clutched in my hands.I’d see fallen stars scattered by my feet
I’d pick one up and roll it between my fingers.

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 10/05/11 at 03:18 PM I especially love how the hands are used in this, the stars, the palm of the Master. Quite inspired. Thank you. |
