Has This Bridge Been Burned?

by Cathlyn Cartier

You've been my closest friend for years.
Somewhere we crossed the line between "just" friends and became much more.

I saw my future with you.
I saw our future together;
best friends spending the rest of their lives together...

Sharing every joy as well as sorrow,
triumph as well as tragedy,
but facing them together, side by side.
We were invincible to the woes of the world
and conquerors of all tribulations.

You saw your future with me.
You saw our future together;
best friends who could spend the rest of their lives together...

But you saw a cloud around the silver lining and tarnish on the golden bells.
You allowed trivialities to shadow your vision.
While in your heart you knew the wonder of love that could transcend obstacles,
your mind cast doubts and fear.
Rather than turning to the friendship,
you fled into your cowardly world of darkness and denial.

The weak, distant echo of friendship whispered to you, softly calling you out of your isolation.

But where does one turn now, having crossed the bridge from friendship to more?
Is it possible to cross back,
or once crossed over does the bridge lead only to a barren wasteland of what once was,
but can no longer be found?

Author's Note: Thank you for listening. You know who you are, and this is the outcome of thosefew hours of rambling and wondering, plus a few more tear-filled moments of reflection and introspection. This wouldn't have been put on paper without first having a "wall to bounce things off of".. = )

I have felt this, I have KNOWN this...you describe in such great detail. The last 2 lines...that's where I am right now. Oh, Cathlyn, you've left me raw. Well done, bravo!

Those heartfelt events that seem to cry out for explanation..even if it's only to one's self - Too bad the world is sectioned off with dividing lines so you could tell where you should stop or just how far you can go...sometimes there are wonderfull outcomes, but just as often they can be sad, heartbreaking, and more often than not...irrepairable - I hope this is one of those that can be reclaimed - RCat

My wife could indentify with the message of this poem. When our relationship started getting deeper and she wanted more commitment... I ran... had to finish my degree (I said). Luckily, two years later we found each other again and she AND I said Yes! Your poem is a gift to me not only because of lines like: "you fled into your cowardly world of darkness and denial" and "or once crossed over does the bridge lead only to a barren wasteland of what once was, but can no longer be found?" bit because of the honesty and trust in its sharing. Good work Cathlyn.

Sad reminder that some bridges are indeed burned. I'd like to believe though that many more are just closed temporarily, although those closures can take months, even years before reopening.
