Hands Up (for Bonnie) by Kristine Briese"I am mute. Prostrate. Tattered and bruised. Broken.
I raise my hands up. I surrender." --Bonnie Adams
"I am mute."
But you are not.
With "Self Discoveries",
with "Cymbals and Drums",
you proclaim your rhythmic self:
songstress, minstrel, chorister, troubadour.
Such a voice is never mute,
even when silent.
"Prostrate. Tattered and bruised. Broken."
But you are not.
I've seen you Amazonian
with red toenails:
tall and sun-seeking,
dancing and seasoned.
Such red-haired resilience is never broken,
even when abused.
"I raise my hands up. I surrender."
But you do not.
These are the hands
that scratch your dog's ears,
that offer me a flashlight
and chocolate in an imaginary haven.
Such hands are not meant for surrender,
even when empty.
If you raise them up,
grasp handfuls of sky.
