The Dawning (reposted, not new) by Anne Howe
Do we have a sense of knowing
When this big event is due
As we journey t'wards the cervical
Joined by curly umbilical
To complete this whole birth cycle
Forging head first
Breaking through
I brace myself
The curtains part
On centre stage I'm found
Do I know that these are people
Who my body now surround
At once I'm hugged
Then turned around
And smacked upon the bum
My heel is pricked
They squeeze out blood
Do they treat me as gently as they should?
Or is this initiation
Just the dawning of my life
The smiling sun is dawning too
And soon begins to glow
With earthly knowledge, now I know
That somewhere between my chin and toe
Is where the pangs of hunger grow
Theres rumbling down below
With care my mother takes me
There is something in her smile
Its as though were friends already
And shes loved me for a while
I kind of push around, my face
And nuzzle until I find a place
Where sucking hard causes milk to race
To fill that hollow hungry space
That grumbles
Down below
Her skin is warm and tender
Soft and gentle on my face
For now the world is quieter
And not such a frightening place
The decision's made
The fare's been paid
It was, a one way ticket
If this is 'life'
In spite of clatter and strife
I guess I'll just 'be in it' ! 11/11/2002 Posted on 11/11/2002 Copyright © 2024 Anne Howe
