Ask An Angel

by JD Clay

Are these wings issued you
Must they be returned
Feathers, individual
Each one to be earned

What holds up your halo
Is it made of gold
Do you ever sleep at night
Or shiver from the cold

Can you hear me when I cry
Experience my pain
Is it always bright like this
Does it ever rain

How do you communicate
Never heard you speak
Perhaps multi-lingual
Arabic or Greek

Are these your only clothes
Just this swaddling robe
Do you need a compass
To navigate the globe

Where are all the unicorns
Could they be for real
Can you sense emotions
Which ones do you feel

Have you ever fallen
Do wings get in the way
Can you hear my every plea
How often should I pray

Are there really pearly gates
In heaven, I persist
When I go, I hope to be
Atop Saint Peter's list

Very cool poem. Clever way to approach a subject wafting ethereal. I will print this one out for my wife to read. Right down her alley. Like the rhymes too.

This is so pure, so innocent... I loved the question about earning the wings one feather at a time! I DO wonder! Thank you for such a peaceful read.

Beautiful, perceptive observations. Wonderful, calming flo, even tho questions usually create staccato. A touching and thought provoking read!

Reminds me of "Angels Among Us" by the group Alabama. So soft & sweet, makes me misty. :)

Hi Jd, Just finish your poem, Ask An Angel. It's beauitful. It rhymes very well & clever. I need to do better with my rhyming in poems. Depends on what it is. Jean

angels put, such questions would answer, directly yes and no to every one, as angels live not in such grey areas as to say perhaps, perhaps not, not given to splitting hair or politicking. Lucky be you Jadi to have ascended an angel to your musings and held her ear as Antony and lent she did her ear nevertheless, not being Roman, but curious.

I silent asked an Angel, not expecting a reply, and was leaving the page when angelshivvvers called me back... ripple me all over (again&again) nudging me to ask: Have you ever written the response poem to this, Angel? ... pace *m.a

Once I dreamt four Angels above me, at the foot of my bed, when physical pain was violent and lost were the tears. Their speak was silent as prayer that musics the heart- their wings were were harmonious with the flow of their pearlgrey garment and ... I love the innocence, the pure this poem exudes, love its Angel-presence in the top rated list. Grazie ...*m.a

Ah how I love to think of those "feathers" "earned" as feathers in their caps- turned to halos. Also the tendancy to question in a friendly companionable manner- the iconic beauty and truth of things- with a thirst for angelic improvisation, intuition and emotional exposure? Well I may be jet-lagged being just home from China- but I love imagining your St Peter "list"ing here in the sense of a tilt- a little sideways smile!

I love this poem and I am glad to see it here now. So oft good works stay buried in librarys and do not breathe the light of day. bravo jd. smh
