On the Downward Side of Dozing

In early morn is when it happens
REM sleep lends itself
to some strange adventures
where little things become big things
when in reality they really aren’t
and can spoil the ride
even though I know they’re not real
upsetting just the same
I’m getting better at it though
in a recent dream
I knew enough to put whatever
was bothering me
into a cardboard box
that just happened to be there
or did I create the container out of necessity
in the subconscious mind?
Conveniently
small enough to carry under my arm
and continued through the
rest of the dream
with no further internal conflicts
till I woke as I usually do
to the purple dawn
