Sign of The Times II

by Chris Sorrenti

I’ve always agreed that the climate is changing; it always has and will. My beef is with the Al Gores, who preach that it’s all man’s fault. In my opinion, although I don’t deny we may be adding to the problem, how much of an influence we have is impossible to gage. All I know is that the coastal cities have yet to be flooded, as predicted by Mr. Gore.

None the less, the West has set goals, that so far, it hasn't been able to reach, although giving itself lots of time, when most of these politicians will have long since left office, and even died. And like many, I wonder what’s the point, when Russia, China, and India, major polluters, have set no limits to their Carbon emissions.

What is noticeable in this part of the world, are the increasingly violent summer storms, with much damage and destruction to trees and homes, with little loss of life thankfully, so far, though one can easily imagine the emotional scars left behind, if not experiencing it first hand.

Below are some photos from our neighborhood, courtesy of my son, that show before and after shots of some of the trees lost in a macroburst that swept across the region in June. My poem, There Were the Trees, also deals with this subject.

someone once said that the longest journey begins with the first step. one's life and the choices one makes in that life should not, cannot be dictated otherwise to follow the wiser path, if only for the sheer and life sustaining overwhelming sense that it makes. I don't mean to sound preachy but man has it within his reasoning power if not will to remedy the indisputable wrongs that he has perpetrated not only on his fellow man but on this earth, this life sustaining nurturer of others. there is no other, my brother, Chris.

life sustaining nurturer of ours, there is no other.
