Wings of the Future? by Chris Sorrenti
Caught an interesting segment on 60 Minutes this past weekend, of the possible return of supersonic airlines, aiming for 2035.
Currently being developed by Boom Technology, the company promises supersonic flight at only a $100/head. Unlike the Concorde of 20+ years ago however, their aircraft (resembling a dart), named Overture, will also fly cross continent.
The Concorde was limited due to its destructive sonic boom (when breaking the sound barrier) to flying trans-Atlantic only, at a very high price to customers. Encore gets around the sonic boom by having a special tail for its engine exhausts, that dissipates the vibrations responsible for the boom.
