Really Really...Really?

by Chris Sorrenti

It started in a Christmas commercial
last year or the one before

A son tells his mom
dad will really really like his gift
and sure enough upon unwrapping
the dad says to the boy cutely
he really really does

No doubt
the double emphasis used before
but since then
taken off
subconsciously or on purpose
showing up
media-wise in numerous places
neither right or wrong

I’m not laughing at this revelation
but simply making light
in how human nature being what it is
a word or combination
repetition of
becomes popularized in current culture
to see how long it lasts

Always the rebel me in defiance
will continue to use the singular form
really?...
really really

Chris. I completely empathize. We live in strange linguistic times. There are words that get my goat, words like SUPER, which is used when making reference to things like men, markets and football games and more things than I care to mention. Even words like NEW, such as New York New England, New Zealand ( where was old Zealand, I wonder.? ) New Hampshire, Nova Scotia, New New, New, I mean all these places are no longer new, but old as the hills, which leaves me to wonder where the new hills are.? Whatever happened to a person, place or thing having its own unique name?
