Body Chemistry by Chris Sorrenti
one need only look to the rose on the table
sipping water from its vase
squirrel outside bouncing cautiously amid fragile sunshine
for that last bit of nourishment before winter sets in
are we humans that much different?
save in our godly aspiring ways
often trying to re-write the rules
to our own biology
the only species to purposely ingest things
we know better ought not to
enhance those natural abilities
that work best when not tampered with
altering our make-up in all too predictable ways
when if we hadn’t in the first place
in the long run
it’d turn out alright
till the substance within
no longer reflects the nature surrounding
then upon realizing our folly
attempt a hasty retreat
only to pay the price
