i didn't know

by Melissa Arel

i didn't know what it was like
to be loved without reservation or demand -
to have a love you can wrap your skin around
and hollow out a place for it to rest;
to burrow out a home within my chest.
i didn't know what it was like
to feel at peace, safe inside human hands
until you held my hand, and now i know
i understand.
