Citrullus lanatus

by Chris Sorrenti

I enjoy it in summertime
When fresh
In small portions
See it as energy food
Great for satisfying hunger
Between meals
Kinda like shrimp
But in a different way

Low in fat
Rich in vitamin A and C
Potassium
A wonder how
They’ve genetically modified it
To mature before the seeds
Turn dark and hard

Fruit rich in water
Gives it its name
To satisfy thirst
Stay hydrated
On a hot summer's day
And if you see this as
Sort of a promo ad
Then I guess that’s what it is

It is high time the watermelon got its due in a poem. It has been long overdue. If the watermelon could speak it would thank you, Delightful ode, Chris.
