For Cathy

by Chris Sorrenti

I really enjoyed holding hands with you
to Neil Young’s
Only Love Can Break Your Heart
and a whole bunch of other tunes
blaring on the loud speaker
at that old arena in Arnprior

Looking back now
as you can well imagine
those were scary times for me
what with my budding
confused sexuality
the awkwardness of a shy boy
who wanted so badly to break out of himself
Poetry was still years away

But I do appreciate the invitation to your party
though I knew there’d be drugs there
and I guess so did mom
glad I didn’t go at 13
only at the right time
to finally answer that call

Giving you the ring
was a really big deal for me
wanted so much to make you happy
yet so nervous and excited
had to pass it through a friend
so embarrassing when it fell apart
an omen perhaps
for our too brief romance

Though I really enjoyed holding your hand
at the skating rink
you were my first that way
and in the end
despite what you thought of me
and my complex sexuality
you wouldn’t be the last

Author's Note: And yes, as weird as it may sound...I still love you. Be well my friend. xo

Chris, I did so enjoy this. What a precious moment reading this. I assume you are speaking personally here, or maybe not. But if so, thank you for sharing. Those early years upon the budding of sexuality are so very confusing, stimulating AND memorable - as evidenced by your poem. I like the narrative or letter-like mode. Just perfect! Thanks again.
