Snow Trench

by Chris Sorrenti

There was so much snow over the winter of ‘71-’72, my brother Mark and I had to shovel out the driveway for our dad every other day. The upside was that there were lots of snow days (school closed) due to the blizzards.

There was so much snow in fact, we built a WWI style trench with it, down the side of the driveway, then along the front of our property, parallel with the street.

One of our favorite games was to lob snowballs close by but not at passersby when they weren't looking. We'd then quickly duck down into the trench. They couldn't see that there was a trench from their angle on the road...it just looked like a snowbank.

It was hilarious, as we slowly poked our heads up and watched as the person would look all around, trying to figure out where the snowball had come from.

Author's Note: Nostalgia piece. A recent storm, that was predicted to produce up to 40cm of snow, brought back memories of my first winter in Ottawa (age 14).

Fourteen would have been a prime age with lots of energy and not enough sense to think it was work (well, maybe), but figuring out how to use the snow to build cool stuff like trenches. Neat memories, Chris.
