though I'm light years away

by Chris Sorrenti

if I could
I would wrap you
in the softest of blankets
hold it gently around you
with my arms
that could stretch into years
so you would never be cold again
if I could

If I could
I would make all those things
wrong in your life right
I would heal you
just as Jesus did
and still does
all the treasures you cherish
in the corners of your eyes
yet can never seem to capture
I would lasso
into a bottomless haversack
send it Express Post
if I could

though I’m light years away
where days become centuries
and all I have to hold onto
is your face and your voice
can you see us?
sense it all those miles away?
deep here inside us
this pilot light
with our initials carved into it

if I could
I would turn all this into reality
though even Jesus
has a quota on miracles

“not today son
but there will be another time
for now wrap yourself
in that softest of blankets
your words and her memories
to keep you both
warm through the night”

Very touching, Chris. The repetition of "if I could" really spells out the longing. I especially liked these lines - "all the treasures you cherish in the corners of your eyes" and " deep here inside us this pilot light with our initials carved into it". The use of "pilot light" is brilliant(no pun intended).
