Middle Toe - Left Foot

by Chris Sorrenti

who’d ever think falling asleep on the couch
could be a risky proposition?

but it is after all late summer
August...the month of spiders
when the heat of day is rapidly replaced
by cooler degrees in evening
temptation...
for those temperature and size challenged individuals
to sneak into a warm hunter friendly abode
through opening at bottom of patio door skirt
...I’ve lazily been meaning to replace

and me
foolish enough to doze off in shorts and T...bare feet
to the documentary TV warnings
of arachnid vampires
who do their best hunting at night

midnight in fact
I awake to searing pain
middle toe...left foot...inflamed
can barely put weight on it

reality check
did I drop a frying pan on my foot?
...negative
and yet the toe feels broken
though I’ve never broken a bone in my body
albeit fractured an arm once
in a winter ice fall
bruised ribs rollerblading
so in an off hand way
I can do my own prognosis
subsequent debate...

whether go to the hospital
the two to four hour waiting list however
compels me to hold off
see what the next day brings

...limping
I head off to work
and as the day progresses
pain subsides

that evening
I pull off related sock...
redness is gone
except for two tiny puncture marks
half a centimeter across

Wow! Got that toe good. Now I won't sleep tonight! Ha!
