PC Submariner

by Chris Sorrenti

home again
   at last!
    just above
    below
those life giving
    taking
ripples of Pacific blue
    where war is fun
    and no real man
         fear death
      save me!

up the throat
of my Pentium II
    Gato class
    periscope
    willingly thrust into rain
      of depth charges
software
allowing each scenario
    be viewed
    from on high
    to make Admiral Lockwood
      jealous
      proud

here
I am skipper
    king!
    provided the Japanese
       zig
       or zag
    my way
each order
followed by a snappy
    (love it)
    AYE SIR!

what’ll it be today men?
    armed merchant
    tanker
    battleship
    or nice big flattop?
all the above!
    they respond
    enthusiastically

but every campaign
has its price
    dishes
    laundry
    groceries
    work
forcing me back to base
if only I didn’t have to
eat and sleep
before that next

I enjoyed the voyage from below to above and back, the dip into the ordinary routines that are the flow of life. I don't know that I have ever heard anyone save my buddy Chris who related to the sentiment I feel - reflected in your last four lines. It is good to be here above and below the water line with you my friend. Waiting for the next ping. Thanks.
