Of Heaven and Hell

by Chris Sorrenti

All along the journey
We’re given glimpses
A subtle hint of what lies beyond

The experience of an ice cream cone
On a hot summer’s day
The sudden discovery of a spider
On your bedroom wall

All along the journey
The decision is ours
Make and take with us
Our own version of Heaven or Hell

Want to know what the up is like?
The answer’s simple
Take all the good things in this world
Put them together

Want to know what the down’s about?
Same formula
Take what’s bad in this world
Put it all together

None of us should need
To be drawn a picture

All along the journey
We’re given clues
Subtle confirmation
Of what we’ve always known

A policeman killed
In the line of duty
When a baby smiles
For the very first time

All along the journey
The choice is ours
Make and take with us
Our own version of Heaven or Hell

Chris, I just love this. It presents as only poetry and you can, what it means to be human. I like the emphasis on choice. We choose our attitudes, perspectives, and to a certain extent even our feelings. The imagery is just wonderful. That second stanza literally made me chuckle out loud. "The sudden discovery of a spider On your bedroom wall" I love it. Of course, your last stanza is an apt culmination... an end... and for the reader a beginning. Thanks dear friend.
