Subliminal Messages

by Chris Sorrenti

an explosion tears through USS Iowa’s no. 2 turret
the blast, easily contained within her 16 inch gun armor

47 sailors die on this WWII era battleship
but not from a kamikaze

it's 1989, and the US, no longer at war

a few days later, 6,000 miles to the north
a 6 year old Soviet attack submarine, the Komsomolets
goes to the bottom, an accidental fire in its nuclear reactor

42 sailors die in this latest of similar incidents

the USSR isn't at war either

One of the sins of the so-called super powers - to spend so much of our national resources on needless defense and fear. This is perhaps a consequence of living in and allowing ourselves to be enveloped by that fear. Thanks Chris.
