Death in the Fog by Nancy AmesMy name is Melanie and I only remembered this just now...
I think it was one day last summer... so I guess I was half
asleep, drinking my morning coffee on the couch, and I
started watching a news show from down in California
somewhere, and they were filling up some leftover time,
you know, at the very end of the broadcast the way they do,
when something a bit peculiar happened.
At first the news anchor guy was saying, in his most solemn
voice, "We have received reports of a terrible multi-vehicle
collision on the coast highway earlier this morning. Sadly, a
number of people have suffered serious injuries, one or two
possibly fatal. Authorities tell us they have determined that
a dense layer of fog moving inland off the Pacific Ocean was
likely a contributing cause."
Then they were filling time, as I said, just before cutting to the
commercials, weirdly trying for some of that "friendly banter"
they do, I suppose, and one of the girls at the desk mentioned
that a reporter, a friend of hers who was at the scene of the
accident, had sent in a short clip of one of the accident victims,
a very tearful woman it was, who had only sustained a few minor
injuries however, and this woman was crying and saying how
she felt very upset about causing such an awful pile-up, but
she had to slam on her brakes all of a sudden when she saw
some ghosts standing around on the road up ahead of her, right
in front of her car.
The middle-aged news anchor asked the weatherman for
some sort of wrap-up comment, but the sports guy spoke up
first and louder and he goes, "Ghosts! Really? But didn`t she
know you can just drive right through them?"

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 02/28/18 at 03:02 AM I love ghost stories and dark humour, but after reading this over a couple of times, still not sure how to take this. And I like that too. All in all a fine piece of writing, Nancy. Great ending also. ;) |
Posted by Brian Francis on 02/28/18 at 06:32 PM I too have found some strange commentary while watching the live stream from the local news, it stays live during commercials.
I like the prosey feel of your piece "Death in the Fog" as well as the story flow and voice. Good job!

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 03/07/18 at 06:54 PM Great story telling. I like the first person, kind of down homesy style, that last stanza taking it to another level as far as how people respond to disaster. Quirky ending - definitely memorable. Dare I say, haunting... |
