Embracing the Highs

by Chris Sorrenti

   for Dawn

work is already yesterday
the world of systems
left far behind
at least until tomorrow
slowly releases its invasiveness
the annoying ring of cell phones
unwanted strangers’ conversations
for another starry-eyed night
as we dunk our media bitten toes
into the churning waters of inner-bohemia

a bottle of wine
red or white
always slightly chilled
to dull the struggle
excite the senses, help us forget
where money comes from
all too quickly goes
the first of several cigarettes
tobacco & cannabis
rolled together
as the Division Bell reunites us
in hedonistic ritual
intimacy still to look forward to
for those who’ve lost their twenties
even better over fifty
having shed the fears and tears
individually together
of those inexperienced years

vigorously we shake off
the multi-layers of death-talk
the groundhog-day ritual
of farewells
colleagues, friends, family...celebrities
life is indeed for the living
so let us live
without guilt or remorse
knowing centuries ago
those like us burned at the stake
for simply being who we must
choosing enlightenment
over following the puritanical herd
in our humble cottage
by the freeway
that soon calls us back
from this pleasant dream

Man, can I relate at so many levels. "the world of systems" left behind. I can see the guy on the way home on the subway, letting his imagination transition from the urban towers to the humble cottage. And when home he enters the other world of his writing, relationships, reflecting on saying goodbye to the fears and tears of the twenties. Again, I can relate. The richness in your poem delights - I can still almost taste that chilled wine, see the flickering of the candles. Great images, Chris, rich poem. Thanks.

I needed this. I'm on the other end of tale... in my mid twenties, getting my first real taste of what this adult life is about. I'll never forget being 14, a favorite teacher told me "As hard as things seem now, things will only get worse if you don't make the most of what you have, if you don't work to make things better" and how swiftly ten years have passed since. It's hard sometimes, being worn out by it all, so this is a poignant reminder. Thank you.
