Seasonal Stirrings by Kristina WoodhillLast night
temperatures dipping
into autumn's pool
window's shutting out the chill
chill damping down
summer nights' pepperings,
long hot nights with windows
wide-eared
so many sounds pinched
and dashed
sometimes ground into her ears;
crickets' as-salting rhythm
cicadas steady on to dawn
like a slow, steady drizzle
of thick molasses
dog's barking
their quick grate of ginger,
odd frog burps
trailing busy tongues
occasionally a kill deer
piercing the low notes,
adding bright lemony zest
night heron passing by
squawking out instructions
stir, stir, stir
as the woman, in some wise moment,
perhaps philosophical surrender,
opened completely
letting the whole shebang
night after night
mix and mush and musically
drum her to sleep
last night
dipping temperatures
windows closed
trained ears straining against
autumn's odd still chill
