Dog Days

by Chris Sorrenti

when all is said and done
you’ll eat the scraps they provide you
hunting now only for the easy meal

sometimes the meat is fresh and tasty
while other feedings
gristle to the bone
though you’ll settle for
whatever your owners throw to you
knowing through the yelps
of canine relatives
there are dogs
abused and starving
only blocks away

and while yourself barking loudly
with so much to say
your masters scold
tell you lie down shut up
or worse
simply ignore you

sometimes in frustration
you’d like to bite them
though knowing instinctively
it wouldn’t be wise

so just close your eyes and
go to sleep
tomorrow is another day

Thanks for taking the side of the dog, Chris. I pity dogs, who like humans live lives of quiet desperation, when they'd much prefer to hunt, I gather it would give them the greater satisfaction if they would revert back to being wolves. Yes, I pity dogs which are housebroken, when they had the entirety of nature in which to trek and do their dog thing.
