MERRY

by W. Mahlon Purdin

Sleeping in heavenly peace eludes many today.
Watching television we see people just like us
Homeless, hopeless, terrified of the future
And struggling in a land of plenty.

Where once all was calm and all was bright
Today there is the greedy darkness that lurks
Behind the layoffs and losses
And shades the might into fright.

Glories still stream from heaven afar.
There are still hand-in-hand moments with joy,
The sense of being "lucky" all the time.
I still find words. I still find rhyme.

The amber waves of grain, somehow less redeeming.
Christmas morn is coming, the tree is gleaming.
Those radiant beams and that verdant field;
Where is the dream, the hope, the love that healed?

Aptly put and so true, Mahon...not only for America, but Canada and the World too.

Such a timely piece, Mahlon. I really liked the phrase "greedy darkness that lurks". You've nailed the stark contrasts for people right now. Much to relate to and ponder here.
