Ode to a Bird by Brian Francis
There is an empty cage up the hall
its toys all still and perches empty
A feather here or there beneath
speaks of a happier time
The chirps and beeps the ruckus laughter
are silenced now and gone
the calls for Papa
and demands for attention
annoy now only in dreams
My heart aches with loss
my tears still well with every thought
unsure of how to go on
I dutifully navigate my days
thoughts interrupt my oblivious mind
and the tears all flood again
the pain so great I am forced to wail
and shudder in soulful agony
mourning that beautiful being
