In Service of the Many - In Service of the Few

by Chris Sorrenti

I send the e-mails
make the phone calls
without question or complaint
asking for prayers
in addition to my own
and in response
reply to the well wishes
for those family and friends
succumb to their physical ails
never losing sight of the humanity
that keeps them dear to me
keeps me going
so that someday I may see them again

marveling at how my own health
does not waver
except at night
when finally surrendering to the fatigue
and in shaky peace
wonder which illness
will surely someday strike me down
and when I fall
who then will send the e-mails
make the phone calls
ask for prayers
and respond to the well wishes
when it’s my turn
to lie in that hospital bed

Author's Note: I post this in response to the passing of my sister-in-law, Danielle, yesterday, after a courageous 8 year battle with Cancer. Written at a time when it seemed every week I was losing a loved one.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your sister-in-law, Chris. I lost two friends of my age this year - it is difficult. You express your concerns (also mine) very well. We're all in this together.
