The Primitive's Mirror

by Chris Sorrenti

once I started watching
couldn’t turn away
I was a Neanderthal on electronic surfboard
mindlessly pressing the buttons
but no matter where it carried me
the message remained the same

on one channel, fantasy
the next, a reality
the more I saw
less certain
which was mimicking the other...

the treachery of Melrose Place
followed by a relieved O.J.
Bart and Lisa laughing at Itchy and Scratchy
Kosovo dying in living color

night after night
Hollywood’s beautiful people
getting rich off the savagery...

I felt quite at home with my rocks and spears

Nice collaboration with Ms. Sparling, Chris. I especially like the "Neanderthal on electronic surfboard," and that killer last line. Thanks!
