The Modeler's Poem

by Chris Sorrenti

With each new box
the cycle is repeated
constructable replica
imitation reality
yet a reality unto itself

Pieces are washed of injected oil
cut carefully from their trees
then minute by minute
hour upon hour
the plastic takes form

And what shall it be?
Spitfire or Millennium Falcon
perhaps a man o’ war at full sail
nothing looks hotter
than a speed machine
with chrome hubs
raised carburetor

But the task is not easy
even Herculean
considered the in-between
from unwrap to decal
cement spill a risk
pin sized accessory
lost to the floor
many well intended works of art
sit abandoned on a shelf

Though some still manage
to beat the odds
from childhood
bitten by the bug
for every one assembled
five more purchased
colorful box interiors cluttered
with pieces of a dream
waiting patiently to be whole

My husband to a "T" here, Chris. Good one. He ran across some books about airplanes "Owners' Workshop Manual" for whatever, which are really informative, lots of photographs, in depth. One of the books was about the Millenium Falcon which I thought was a hoot.
